What are Doctoral Monologues?

The purpose of the call is to promote dissemination activities among young doctoral researchers, the Doctoral Schools, and the Scientific Culture Unit of the University of Granada.

Participants must articulate a informative monologue of their doctoral thesis within a time limit of no more than four minutes and without any kind of graphic or audiovisual support. Only the spoken word may be used as a means of expression.

This contest is an initiative of the Doctoral Schools and the Scientific Culture Unit of the University of Granada to promote the development of communication and scientific dissemination skills among future doctors.

The aim is for researchers in training/doctoral candidates to be able to convey to society what they do, how they do it, and why they do it. For this purpose, their presentation is proposed in the form of a monologue, explaining the content of the thesis in simple, accessible, and engaging language.

Participant Requirements

All doctoral candidates at the University of Granada who have successfully passed at least one annual evaluation of the progress of their Thesis (Monitoring and Research Plan) may participate.

Applications must have the approval of the tutor and the doctoral candidate's supervisor and guarantee that the information provided is suitable for public dissemination. These requirements will be accredited along with the submission of the application.

Award Procedure

Two phases are determined:

First phase: The Jury will view the received videos and select 10 monologues for the final phase of the contest.
The list of finalists designated by the Jury will be published on the EIP website https://escuelaposgrado.ugr.es/, opening a period of 10 business days for the presentation of allegations, counted from the day following the publication.
Once this period is over, the instructing body will submit the Jury's proposal with the finalists to the competent body for resolution and publication on the website https://escuelaposgrado.ugr.es/.
Participation implies full acceptance of the rules.
Second phase: The selected monologues will advance to the final phase, which will be held in person at one of the facilities of the University of Granada, on a date to be determined, which will be communicated with sufficient notice. In this phase, the Jury will select the two best candidates and will ask the audience to choose a third from the candidates who have not been selected, to award them the “Audience Award”.
The list of prizes will be published on the EIP website https://escuelaposgrado.ugr.es/, opening a period of 10 business days for the presentation of allegations, counted from the day following the publication.
After this period, the instructing body will send this list to the competent body, which will issue the final resolution with the Jury's decision and the description of the awards granted.
Participation implies full acceptance of the rules.

Evaluation Criteria

The evaluation criteria will be common to all branches of knowledge:

Content: description of the research topic and its importance, methodology, the most relevant expected results, and possible preliminary conclusions using a logical and engaging structure. (maximum 5 points)
Expression and creativity: use of simple and informative language (avoiding technicalities and scientific jargon) that allows the understanding of the topic. Originality in presentation and the ability to make the audience want to know more about the topic will be valued. Do not trivialize the research content; it should be informative, approachable yet rigorous. (maximum 5 points)
Audience Award: the audience will assess the candidates with the same criteria as the Jury (described in the two previous sections), assigning a maximum of 5 points to each criterion. This score will be noted on a ballot handed out to those attending the final session of the contest, thus deciding the recipient of the Audience Award.
